Years after a trial or crisis, we are often still prisoners of guilt, usually false guilt. When Jesus invites us to find rest for our souls, He not only gives it, but He makes us worthy of receiving it. Finding our way to the place where we can hear Him saying "Let not your hearts be troubled," is accomplished simply by knowing Him, and then growing to know Him more.

Nobody needs to tell us we're hypocrites; we know it better than they do. During those times, our whole life seems wasted. We wonder if all that's left to us now is "playing out the string"; quietly slipping in heaven's side door without hearing the words we long to hear: "Well done, good and faithful servant. In other words, we're paralyzed by the myth of perfection.

Let this sink in for a minute: If you were the only person in the world to accept Jesus Christ as Savior-the only one out of the billions who have lived-Jesus would still have submitted Himself to the humiliation of the Cross. Why? And why, when God created humans, did He give them-us-free will? Adam and Eve could choose complete obedience with its' obvious rewards in the Garden, or they could choose disobedience, and with it rebellion and destruction. Why give them-us-that choice?

One of my favorite ways to kick off adult retreats-especially men's retreats-is to have them sing the children's song Jesus Loves Me. Grins and groans always greet me when I try this, but I know a secret: Most of the adults in the room no longer feel like Jesus loves them, if they ever did.
It isn't that these adults (including, probably, most of you reading this devotional) doubt Jesus, or the Bible; it's that they feel too hypocritical or too unworthy or too distant or too flawed or too sinful to believe Jesus could love them. From the front of the crowd it's truly amazing to watch as the song's simple truth plows through years of stress and hurt, leaving some even fighting back tears.

Across town, a reporter pursues truth against a growing tide of political correctness and cynicism. Sometimes he questions: Is my career worth all this grief? Even in the church down the street, tension is no stranger. Staff members ask these same questions, and their answers are frightening. Since the Fall, friction has been the by-product of human interaction, and these days it's kindled white hot.
