Our Weekly Devotional

Shortly after the release of his first three collections of Bible studies on faith and work (30 Moments Christians Face in the Workplace), Madetomatter's Senior Writer began to look for new ways to reach working Christians. In February, 2002, the first weekly devotional was released under the title "Marketplace Moments." Now approaching it's tenth year, the column's title was changed to Made to Matter on January 1, 2008. With over 500 devotionals written on topics important to workers in every walk of life, there's likely one written about the issues facing you right now, so we've placed them here, searchable, for readers to explore anew. Got a favorite? Write to let us know. Looking for something to send that friend whose suffered a loss, or who has had a serious setback at work? You might find a column that captures the essence of your feelings right here. From the deeply moving story of the WWII canteen in North Platte, Nebraska to the words and life-tales of some of history's best-known and least-known characters, there's something here for everyone.

Jesus walked the earth during times of great national and international turmoil, and then he picked a team of regular men and women to build His Kingdom when He returned to heaven to advocate for us at the Father's right hand. Those regular men and women of faith changed the world in one generation. How? By looking and sounding and acting like the Prince of Peace.

When Jesus went to the Cross, your name was written on His heart.

Nobody needs to tell us we're hypocrites; we know it better than they do. During those times, our whole life seems wasted. We wonder if all that's left to us now is "playing out the string"; quietly slipping in heaven's side door without hearing the words we long to hear: "Well done, good and faithful servant. In other words, we're paralyzed by the myth of perfection.

The email sounded like many others we get. At its heart was a statement most of us can identify with, going something like this: "Chaplain," the carpenter said, "it's like I can't help myself sometimes. The very things I wish I would stop doing are the things I keep doing, and the things I wish I would do-and that I know God wants me to do-are the very things I can't seem to get to or to do."

Sound familiar?

Trudging from my father's pick-up truck to stand as we read words over his casket, I felt as if I were once again the Stage Manager in Thornton Wilder's classic play "Our Town." In fact, some of those who shared the stage with me in our high school production were buried right there; and I felt at times as if they were whispering to each other the words of the graveyard scene in Wilder's incredibly timeless play.

George Lacy was a public school teacher when he and his wife Minnie decided to take their vocational skills to the mission field. In 1903, the couple and their five children journeyed to Saltillo, Mexico to organize and operate a school for girls, the Madero Institute.

Joy turned to sorrow in December, 1904, when a daughter fell ill with Scarlet fever.

Shortly before 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, the sun burst out of the clouds, blessing the courage of a risky decision by Gordon College's leadership to host their graduation ceremonies outdoors. Given the nearly unbelievable stretch of sunless, rain-swept days of the prior month, it seemed incredibly brave. But indoor graduations severely restrict who may attend, and this was to be a celebration unfettered by those restraints.

The question of eternity is the most important question in the human journey, but it is the question we're afraid to ask as "modern Christians." Does Hell exist? If it does, then nothing in life is as important as warning people away from the awful eternality of its' terrible sentence. But if it doesn't, then nothing in Scripture may be counted as truth-and nothing we do, evil or good, makes much sense. Adoniram Judson learned this truth in the worst possible way...

An early fall breeze slipped beneath the trees, sweeping brittle, browned leaves in tiny swirls before it. The leaves scratched their protest on the sidewalk before disappearing into piles pressed up against the chapel where Jesse James' stepfather preached his sermons. The chapel's stone walls dammed the wind's efforts to create a river with leaves, so I shifted my gaze to the right.

I was stalling, of course, hoping I could will away a goodbye waiting inside the home on the grounds of this tiny church camp in Holt, Missouri. It was the summer of '76, the start of my final year of college.
