Perseverance in the face of trials and/or suffering means trusting God enough to ask Him to calm us in our storms, instead of merely asking Him to calm the current storms. God never delights in suffering, but He does delight in our perseverance, and He promises to produce fruit for His Kingdom that honors that perseverance.

Lately, I've found myself more eager to see the Lord return to usher in His Kingdom. The terror and tragedies around us; the suffering of people we know and love; and even the stresses of daily life, all seem bigger than the fixes on the horizon. As the work I do begins to feel like spooning out the ocean, I grow especially impatient with those around me, and even sometimes with God. "What can He be waiting on?" I wonder.

Somewhere in time we bit off---with good intentions--- the "catch more flies with honey" maxim and decided if we sold Jesus as Mr. Fix-It more people might want to know Him. We also came to believe what we were selling...Trouble is, for most of us, the day after we accept Jesus, the boss still yells, the bills still stack up and the pain still hurts.

Rarely are the lines from trial to triumph marked by straight lines; more often they are zigzags and loops---along trails littered with our tears---over obstacles that mark us with bruises, scratches and scars as we nevertheless press on.

Francis lived his entire life focused on eternity. He plowed fields, painted barns, pounded pulpits, preached Jesus, and lived life as fully as any man I've ever known, but he did it all with his eyes on Jesus. Because he did, he could hold the hands of a dying friend and tell them it would be better soon. He could comfort the poor and suffering, and give hope to the hopeless, all because He knew the One who could fix it in the end.

George Lacy was a public school teacher when he and his wife Minnie decided to take their vocational skills to the mission field. In 1903, the couple and their five children journeyed to Saltillo, Mexico to organize and operate a school for girls, the Madero Institute.
Joy turned to sorrow in December, 1904, when a daughter fell ill with Scarlet fever.

"Next week," I told my son's fifth-grade Sunday School class, "we're going to have Jesus as our guest teacher." They looked at me like I had two heads. "Okay, obviously Jesus isn't really going to show up here, but if I could get him here in person, what questions would you ask Him."
