A story is told of Hudson Taylor, a missionary pioneer to the nation of China. For some time, Taylor felt a call to carry the Gospel to that country, and said so one evening to a crowd of potential financial supporters. One version of the story has an audience member asking Taylor what part of China he planned to serve. Puzzled, Taylor's surprise turned to shock when the audience member noted there were more than 600 language groups/dialects there. According to the story, Taylor hadn't realized one size wouldn't fit all in the nation of China.
The same truth applies to Madetomatter.org.
Madetomatter's readers now come from over 124 countries on six continents. We have truck drivers who read us when they sign on in their cabs, active-duty soldiers reading us on their FOB locations in Iraq; CEO's reading us at their desks in Malaysia.
No single writer can speak with a voice that reaches such a diverse audience. No single voice can strike a resonant tone with every worker in every industry in every country.
Not only that, but our Senior Writer, Randy Kilgore, often uses anecdotes and examples from history that only Americans might know. Idioms and expressions that make sense in English often don't translate well, especially when computers are doing the translating.
Since workplace faith knows no borders, we're on the lookout for people fluent in other languages and cultures to work with us to replace Randy's anecdotes with ones that will resonate with readers in other countries and cultures while leaving the teaching portion unchanged.
We're also looking for volunteers to accurately translate our ministry tools in order to make them useful beyond our current English-speaking readers.
What this all means is that Madetomatter.org is looking for new writers, perhaps even you.
Are you a single mother familiar with the challenges of working full-time while also raising a family? Or a scientist with special skill in writing in resonant ways to other scientists? If you think God has gifted you as a writer, we may be the place for you to find an audience while serving ours.
But let's not kid ourselves. Not everyone who thinks they can write really has that skill.
Plus, writing isn't nearly enough. Writers for madetomatter.org have to combine their communication skills with workplace understanding or experience AND Biblical accuracy.
