Dear friends,
We will not surrender our humanity to the evil that attacks the innocent. We will overwhelm their hate with acts of service, love and prayer. Already we have seen the defenders racing to the places where danger was greatest; already we have seen caregivers tending to the wounded; already we have seen strangers helping strangers and loved ones expanding their circle to include the loved ones of others who were here from other places. We know you will join us in praying for the victims and the victim's families in the days and weeks to come; those prayers matter more than you know.
It's important to remember that we don't know yet who all the victims are in such a terribly evil attack. Many people who weren't physically wounded today will carry the sadness and need our help and prayers. In particular, we want to be aware of how the news---and even our conversations as adults---affects our children, who hear the newscasters talking "worst case scenarios" and the commentators telling us "we have to expect more of this", permanently planting fears in places we can't always see in little hearts. Fred Rogers---Mister Rogers to most of us---prepared a pamphlet to help us know how to help our children navigate the aftermath of days like this. We're linking to that pamphlet so parents' can have the benefit of his remarkable and timeless advice.
We're also posting links to resources to help families and others affected by today's attacks. Thanks to Google for assembling this list.
May God make His presence felt in the homes of all who need Him, here and everywhere evil seeks to rob us of our joy.
