We are never alone.
Kathryn & Dad at work

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." ---Matthew 28:20

     Kada Whitecliffs Karu Kilgore.

No, that's not the name of my daughter, seen here helping me repair siding on our former home in Vermont.  Kada was our family pet, perhaps the most beautiful purebred Samoyed God ever created.

Kada is the reason you see my daughter in this picture.  In addition to her perpetual motion, Kada liked to chew.  She'd chew up toys and tools and leashes and just about anything else we left in her reach, including the siding to our house.

So one afternoon in mid-winter, I grabbed my tools and spare shingles and headed out to fix the damage Kada wrought.  Not long after, Kathryn joined me. Side by side we worked, she imitating my every action, absolutely convinced she, too, was repairing the house.    Kathryn & Kada

And so she was; rarely have I enjoyed a chore more.

As I think about work, especially my own, it occurs to me God must have a similar picture in the scrapbook of our relationship, His and mine.  Yours too.

Oh, I'm not suggesting the work we do here on earth isn't important, or that we're not really doing it.  The book of Genesis makes it very clear God assigned us to work down here; in fact, He made us solely responsible for three things: The environment, other people's welfare, and our relationship with Him.  Then, just to cement His high view of our ability to accomplish His purpose, Jesus handed off the launch of Christianity to a bunch of blue collar and entry-level management types.

So it's clear our work is important in God's eyes.

We all know, however, there are things in this life that are beyond us; tasks so complex or so taxing we simply cannot do them on our own.  Those are the moments when He moves next to us, giving us words that comfort beyond our wisdom; strength to persevere beyond our limits; even the tenacity to finish races too long for us to run.  God loves work; and He loves us; so it's natural for Him to pair them up in a majestic combination.  It's even more glorious when He pairs them up and then lingers to labor alongside us.

And so He does.  Every hour; every day; year in and year out.

If we humans are capable of feeling the joy of the moment you just know I'm feeling in this picture; how much more joyful must God feel?

     We are never alone.
